Uzbek Police Investigating Murder Of Former Minister

TASHKENT -- Police in Tashkent say they are investigating the abduction and murder of Uzbekistan’s former minister of culture and sports.

According to officials, Anvar Jabborov, 55, was abducted by unknown individuals from his office at the state-run Uzbek Museum organization in Tashkent on May 8.

His body, bearing traces of violence, was found on May 13 in the Uzbek capital.

Jabborov’s relatives say one suspect has been arrested in connection with the case, but this has not been officially confirmed.

Jabborov served as Uzbekistan’s minister of culture and sports from 2009-2011 before moving on to lead the Uzbek Museum, which manages the country's museums.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
