Washington, 4 April 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko met for more than an hour in Washington today with U.S. President George W. Bush. At a brief news conference after their meeting, the two men said their conversation covered a wide variety of topics, including Ukraine's efforts to integrate into Europe and Yushchenko's decision to withdraw his country's forces from Iraq.
During their talk, Yushchenko reaffirmed his decision to end Ukraine's military effort in Iraq, and Bush said the United States will carry on with the mission even as the coalition dwindles.
Bush said he knew Yushchenko had to keep his word to the people of Ukraine by withdrawing the country's 1,650 troops. Meanwhile, Poland is withdrawing some of its 2,400 troops and Italy will begin pulling out some of its 3,000 member force in September.
Still, Bush but said he accepts Yushchenko's decision.
