United Nations, 2 May 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Two top UN officials today called on states to agree quickly on a new system of safeguards to protect against nuclear proliferation and ensure the use of nuclear energy.
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the head of the UN's nuclear agency, Mohammad el-Baradei, opened a nuclear-arms treaty forum with warnings about weaknesses in the current nonproliferation regime. Annan said countries like Iran must not insist on developing sensitive nuclear technology, and he called on nuclear powers to honor their commitments to disarm.
Citing a worldwide erosion of confidence, Annan urged states to build a system for sharing atomic power that reduces nuclear threats.
Annan said the 35-year-old Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) regime is under stress caused by globalization, terrorism, and the spread of technology.
He told the conference reviewing the treaty that concerns surrounding nuclear programs such as Iran's were of special concern.
