U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned yesterday that it might take years to defeat the Iraqi insurgency. The warning came as at least 46 Iraqis and one U.S. soldier were reportedly killed in attacks the same day. U.S. officials also confirm that they have been involved in secret talks with some insurgent groups. But neither military operations nor talks seem to be stopping the bloodshed in the country.
Prague, 27 June 2005 (RFE/RL) – With Donald Rumsfeld saying the insurgency in Iraq could go on for years, U.S. officials acknowledge they are exploring all avenues to tame the rebellion.
The U.S. top commander in the Persian Gulf region, General John Abizaid, confirmed on U.S. television yesterday that contacts have taken place between the United States and representatives of some insurgent groups.
"American officers and certainly diplomatic people in Baghdad, and also Iraqi diplomatic leaders, have been talking with a broad range of people from the Sunni Arab community, some of whom obviously have some links to the insurgency," Abizaid said.
U.S. officials say they are not involved in negotiations with such extremists as Abu Mus'ab al-Zarqawi, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq.
