Doctors Watching Hunger-Striking Iranian Journalist

14 July 2005 -- Iranian authorities today said that Akbar Ganji, a jailed journalist on a prolonged hunger strike, is being examined by doctors every day and will not be released.

Mohammad Salarkia, deputy head of Tehran's Justice Department, said Ganji is being monitored by prison doctors two or three times a day.

Ganji was sentenced to six years in jail in 2001 after writing articles accusing authorities of murdering dissidents.

Ganji's family members say he has lost more than 18 kilograms during a monthlong hunger strike aimed at securing his release.

The United States, the European Union, rights groups, and Iranian student activists have called for Ganji's release.
