Mikhail Kasyanov, President Vladimir Putin's former prime minister, announced yesterday that he plans to run in the next presidential elections in 2008. Kasyanov has been one of Putin's most vocal critics since he was fired last year, accusing the president of stifling democracy and mismanaging the economy. He is now the first prominent politician to state his intention to run for president.
Prague, 15 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kasyanov, one of Russia's most prominent and charismatic politicians, had so far only hinted he might stand in the 2008 elections.
But yesterday, when asked by reporters whether he intends to run for president, Kasyanov did not mince his words: "Today's answer is yes. If three months ago I was heavily hesitating, today I see the situation is not changing toward
the direction that I wanted and that is why I can't go into the shadows because there is nobody to help develop the political
process that, from my point of view, would lead to the positive results on which millions of Russians could count."
