Russia Says Uranium Enrichment With Iran Possible

6 February 2006 -- A top Russian diplomat said today that it will be possible to create a joint venture to enrich uranium for Iran in Russia only if Tehran resumes its moratorium on enrichment activities.
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak also confirmed that talks on the Russian proposal are expected in Moscow on 16 February.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 4 February voted to report Iran to the UN Security Council, which has the power to impose sanctions. In response, Iran said it would start uranium enrichment and bar surprise international inspections of its facilities.

But Iran has also said it was willing to discuss Moscow's proposal to shift large-scale uranium enrichment to Russian territory in an effort to allay suspicions it is pursuing a weapons program.
