Four Killed In Afghan Cartoon Protests

(RFE/RL)

8 February 2006 -- Afghan authorities say four people were killed and nine injured in Afghanistan today in a continuing wave of protests over cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

The violence erupted in Qalat, the capital of southern Zabul Province.

Afghan Army and Interior Ministry officials say the casualties came after security forces opened fire to control a crowd of stone-throwing protesters, killing four and wounding several. Some security forces were reported injured from flying rocks.

Today's incident came after as many as four people were reported killed on 7 February, when similar protests also turned violent.
