13 February 2006 -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has said the violence sparked by drawings of the Prophet Muhammad could spiral out of control.

Speaking on American television on 12 February, Rice urged governments particularly Iran and Syria, to "act responsibly."

She accused Tehran and Damascus of organizing anti-Western protests in reaction to the caricatures that first appeared in a Danish newspaper in September and were reprinted in other European publications last month.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, meanwhile, has called for dialogue to calm the uproar over the drawings.

Speaking on Danish television late on 12 February, Annan condemned the drawings as offensive, but he also criticized the violent reactions in some Muslim countries.
