Pakistan Police, Protesters Clash For Third Day

(RFE/RL)

15 February 2006 -- Police beat stone-throwing protesters with batons in clashes that injured at least 16 people in northwestern Pakistan today.

It was a third day of violent protests over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that were originally published in a Danish newspaper in September.

Gunfire was heard near a KFC restaurant that was ransacked and torched by protesters. Demonstrators also ransacked two franchises of the Norwegian mobile telephone firm Telenor.

Hundreds of Afghan refugees reportedly joined the protest in Peshawar, the capital of the North West Frontier Province.

In the Philippines, hundreds of Muslim protesters ripped apart and burned Danish flags during a rally outside Denmark's honorary consulate in the capital, Manila.
