Taliban Kills Police At Afghan Checkpoint
April 2, 2006 -- An Afghan provincial official says a Taliban rebel posing as a traveler shot dead four police officers at a remote checkpoint in the south of the country.
AP quoted a provincial administrator in Helmand Province as saying the assailant asked the officers if he could spend the night on March 31 because he was walking alone along a remote road.
After the officers had gone to sleep, the man grabbed one of their rifles and opened fire, killing the four. A fifth officer woke up and shot the man dead.
AP cited purported Taliban spokesman Qari Mohammed Yousaf as later claiming responsibility for the killings.
