May 18, 2006 -- China's Foreign Ministry today said that Iran can attend the next meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) as an observer.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said that India, Pakistan, and Mongolia have also been invited to observe the summit, which brings together four Central Asian states and two regional powers, Russia and China, to address a range of security issues.

Leaders of the SCO states -- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan as well as Russia and China -- are to meet on June 15 in Shanghai, China.
