June 22, 2006 -- Oil spills and damage to sewerage systems are causing heavy pollution in Chechnya's rivers and lakes, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Russian officials warned today.

Yelena Kulikova of the WWF said that the dense mountain forests of war-torn Chechnya and other republics in the North Caucasus are "also in danger because of illegal logging."
