August 8, 2006 -- Chechen President Alu Alkhanov said an amnesty offered to Chechen rebels is producing "good results."

He said that, so far, 84 rebels have laid down their weapons.

The head of Russia's National Antiterrorism Committee, Nikolai Patrushev, offered the amnesty following the death of the rebel leader Shamil Basayev on July 10.
