A statement by the Almaty police department said that the two men are in
their
mid and late 20s, respectively. It said one of the men is a native of Kyrgyzstan and the other one was born in Kazakhstan.
The police say they are still looking for a third suspect.
Debourgues, a 25-year-old French national working for a U.S.-based consulting group, was found dead in his Almaty apartment on August 2.
Kazakh authorities say Debourgues was in the country to prepare a report for the U.S.-based journal "Foreign Affairs." They insist the killing is not linked to the victim's profession.
But Kazakh rights groups have said the way the researcher was killed bears similarities to previous political murders.
Today's police statement details how the suspects described killing
their victim. But it makes no mention of earlier independent reports that
said Debourgues's interpreter witnessed the killing.
