Uzbekistan To Invest $8 Million In Radio Monitoring
(RFE/RL)
December 6, 2006 -- Uzbekistan's Communications and Computerization Agency says it will invest 6.2 million euros ($8.25 million) next year in radio-frequency monitoring.
The state-controlled vesti.uz information website quotes agency official Rustam Mansurov as saying the money will be used to built a fixed monitoring station in eastern Andijon region and six other mobile stations to be located in other areas.
Mansurov said the new stations would be operational in July 2007.
Vesti.uz says funding will come from a loan issued by a German bank, the Frankfurt-based Kreditanstalt fur Wiederaufbau. A German company, Kurt Mitterfellner, will provide the necessary equipment.
Uzbekistan already has 12 monitoring stations, which cover most of its territory.
Radio-frequency monitoring is designed to protect air navigation and other sensitive communications networks, but it can also serve to block radio stations that operate without a proper license.
