December 11, 2006 -- Separatist authorities in the Transdniester region of Moldova say pro-Russian leader Igor Smirnov has been re-elected as president.

The election commission in the breakaway region says preliminary results from the December 10 ballot show Smirnov won 82 percent of the vote -- enough to secure a fourth term in office.

The independence claims of the mostly Russian-speaking territory have not been internationally recognized.
