December 15, 2006 -- Russian prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation against a far-right leader suspected of inciting racial hatred.

Prosecutors in the northern Republic of Karelia today questioned Aleksandr Belov, the leader of the Movement Against Illegal Migration, in connection with September violence in the town of Kondopoga.

At that time, angry crowds attacked businesses owned by local Chechens after a bar fight in a Chechen restaurant there left two local residents dead.

Belov then traveled to Kondopoga for rallies demanding the removal of all foreigners.
