Russia: Nikitin Is A Prisoner of Conscience, Says Amnesty

St. Petersburg, Russia; 30 August 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Jailed Russian naval officer Alexander Nikitin as a prisoner of conscience, says Amnesty International.

A spokesman for the international human rights organization told a news conference in St. Petersburg today that the organization plans to begin an international campaign for Nikitin's release.

Nikitin, a former navy captain, was jailed in St. Petersburg in February without trial. He is accused by the Russian authorities of revealing state secrets while contributing to a report for an environmental group on Russia's nuclear problems.
