Russian Politician Dies After Grenade Blast


IRBIT, Russia -- A local Duma deputy in western Russian has died of wounds he suffered two days ago when a grenade blew up near his home, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The explosion occurred as Aleksandr Barybin, 48, left his house in the town of Irbit on February 9 to go to work. Barybin was hospitalized with severe head injuries and officials said he died in the town's main hospital on February 11.

Barybin was a member of United Russia, the country's ruling party. In addition to being a member of the local Duma, Barybin was the chief of Irbit's main post office.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the assassination. An investigation is under way.

Irbit has a population of some 42,000 people and is located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast about 250 kilometers east of Yekaterinburg.
