Four Killed In Gas Explosion In Azerbaijan

BAKU -- Four people were killed and at least 12 injured in Azerbaijan when a vehicle transporting propane gas exploded, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

The explosion took place on August 9 near an Azpetrol gas station in the village of Padarchol, in the Hajiqabul district, some 110 kilometers south of Baku.

Kenan Khalilov, deputy director of Azpetrol's operations department, told RFE/RL that a car carrying propane gas drove into the filling station and exploded.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said four people died in the explosion, 15 were wounded, and seven cars caught fire.

The Health Ministry said 12 people were injured; two of them were said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Among the injured were three Georgian citizens who were discharged after being treated in hospital.

Witnesses told the APA news agency that a passing bus also caught fire and some passengers were injured.

Jamal Zeynalov, press officer for the Azpetrol group of companies, told the agency the explosion did not take place at the gas station.

He said a car carrying fuel turned into the station to avoid an accident, but flipped over and exploded.

"Serious damage was caused to the gas station and those who were there," Zeynalov said.
