Authorities in the Russian republic of Tatarstan say investigations have been launched into more reported cases of alleged police torture of suspects.

The Tatar Investigative Committee confirmed the probes but did not give a number for how many police in the Tatar capital, Kazan, are facing possible charges in connection with new reported cases of torture.

One case is said to involve the alleged beating and torture of a couple suspected of killing their elderly relative last year.

Police in Kazan have been under increased scrutiny since March after a 52-year-old male suspect died after police allegedly beat and raped him with a champagne bottle.

Several police officers have been arrested and charged in that case, and Tatar Interior Minister Asgat Safarov resigned.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
