Police in northwestern Pakistan say four militants were killed after gunmen attacked a police station in the town of Bannu.

The militant group Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Officials said the dead included two suicide bombers who detonated explosive vests that they aparently smuggled inside the police compound by wearing burqas.

Police said a fifth attacker was arrested after a five-hour gun battle.

Three police reportedly were injured.

Bannu is in Khyber Pukhtunkhwa Province, adjacent to Pakistan's semiautonomous tribal regions that border Afghanistan.

In April, Pakistani Taliban fighters attacked a prison in Bannu and were able to free nearly 400 inmates, including some who were considered dangerous militants.

Based on reporting by AP, AFP, dpa, and RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
