Official Says IMF Team To Visit Kyiv In September

A Ukrainian official says an International Monetary Fund (IMF) team will visit Kyiv in September to assess its 2013 budget plans as Kyiv tries to unfreeze a $15 billion IMF loan program.

First Deputy Prime Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovskyy told Reuters he met IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde on July 31 and reached "a general understanding" the team would visit Kyiv in September.

There was no immediate confirmation from the IMF, which froze its loans for Ukraine after the government failed to carry out unpopular reforms -- including the IMF's call for domestic natural gas prices to be raised by 30 to 50 percent.

Khoroshkovskyy said he told Lagarde raising prices would create a social crisis unless a system to help vulnerable Ukrainians is first developed.

He said the IMF's main concern is Ukraine's macro-economic stability.
