A court in Georgia has fined the opposition politician and former soccer star Kakha Kaladze $10.3 million.

The Tbilisi City Court said Kaladze was fined because he withdrew $2 million from his bank accounts without supplying required information about how the money was spent.

Government officials say they suspect he could be illegally funding the opposition ahead of parliamentary elections in October.

The former Georgian national team captain and twice winner of the Champions League with Italy's AC Milan claims the case is politically motivated.

Kaladze will run for parliament as part of the Georgian Dream opposition coalition, which is led by billionaire tycoon Bidzina Ivanishvili.

The coalition says it wants to end the rule of President Mikheil Saakashvili's governing United National Movement.
