UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned what he calls the "appalling attack" on Shi'ite Muslims in Pakistan on August 16.

Officials said gunmen dragged more than 20 Shi'ite travelers off buses near Gilgit in northwest Pakistan and shot them dead.

Ban expressed outrage over such deliberate attacks in Pakistan on people due to their religious beliefs.

The August 16 attack targeting Shi'ites was the second such incident in the area in six months.

The bus was traveling from the city of Rawalpindi to the northern town of Gilgit, in a mostly Shi'ite area. It was ambushed in the hills of Babusar Top, some 160 kilometers north of the capital, Islamabad.
