Pakistani police officials said militants attacked a checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan overnight, killing at least six police officers and wounding several others.

Two of the police officers, including a rural police superintendent, were beheaded.

Police said more than 100 Taliban militants raided the post in the town of Mattani, south of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province on October 14.

The rebels were armed with heavy machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and assault rifles.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal.

It was not immediately clear how many troops were manning the post when it was attacked.

Police said the militants also suffered losses when security forces retaliated.
