ASHGABAT -- An unknown farmer from Turkmenistan's northern Dashoghuz Province has been elected vice president of the country's Council of Elders.

The council is a rubber-stamp advisory body to the government.

Speaking to a council meeting on October 23, President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov introduced Hally Nazarov as a "respected elder" who enjoys great admiration among his villagers.

The body unanimously elected Nazarov to the post.

Berdymukhammedov also sits as president of the council.

The president's speech was broadcast live on national television.

The Council of Elders consists of some 600 people, mostly above the age of 60.
