Serbia’s biggest opposition party, the pro-Western Democratic Party, has elected the mayor of Belgrade to be its new leader.
Dragan Djilas, 45, was chosen at a party congress on November 25, winning a majority from more than 3,000 delegates.
Addressing the congress, Djilas pledged action to reform the party and guide it toward elections expected in 2016.
He also said the party must admit that it holds a share of responsibility for Serbia’s problems, which include high unemployment, declining living standards, and widespread corruption.
Djilas succeeds former Serbian President Boris Tadic as party chief.
Tadic stepped down as leader of the Democrats after he and the party lost elections earlier this year.
Tadic has been granted the “honorary” presidency of the party.
