Police Thwart Bombing On Daghestani Railroad

Authorities in Russia's Republic of Daghestan in the North Caucasus say they have thwarted the bombing of a railway line.

Local residents in Daghestan’s western Khasavyurt district spotted a suspicious object on the tracks and reported it to police.

Officials say the object was a massive improvised explosive device.

A Federal Security Service team managed to remove the bomb and destroyed it.

The operation lasted several hours, causing railway delays that affected the main line connecting Daghestan's capital, Makhachkala, with Moscow.

Daghestan has become one of the most volatile republics in Russia's North Caucasus in recent years.

Islamic insurgents professing extreme forms of Islam regularly organize terrorist acts and attacks against police, government officials, and moderate Muslims.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
