Former Police Officers Sentenced For Torture in Russia

A court in Russia's Stavropol Krai region has sentenced four former police officers convicted of torturing a suspect.

The court found the four defendants guilty of abuse of office and the premeditated infliction of bodily harm.

They received jail terms between three and six years on February 13.

They were accused of beating a suspect and raping him with a mop handle in a police station in December 2010.

The victim underwent several surgeries and was disabled as a result of his injuries.

Concerns about police torture have been renewed in Russia recently following the death last year of a man in Tatarstan, who was allegedly beaten and raped with a champagne bottle while in custody.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
