Reports from northwestern Pakistan say at least five suicide bombers attacked a police post in the city of Bannu, wounding one police officer.

Bannu police chief Nisar Tanoli told the Associated Press that three of the bombers detonated their explosive vests while police shot the other two attackers dead.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan claimed responsibility for the attack.

He said it was in retaliation for the killings of eight militants whose bullet-riddled bodies were found abandoned in the neighboring North Waziristan tribal district.

Bannu city has been the scene of previous attacks on police officers.

Last year, militants attacked a prison in the city and released hundreds of militants, including a man involved in an attack on former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.

Based on reporting by AP and RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
