BISHKEK -- Investigations into abuse of office have been launched against the mayor of Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek.

Kyrgyzstan's Prosecutor-General's Office announced on December 1 that Isa Omurkulov and several of his associates are suspected of redefining the borders of central Bishkek's Victory Park to accommodate the existence of illegal constructions from 2002 to 2010 and to allow for the erection of new buildings on park grounds.

A spokesman for the Prosecutor-General's Office, Ulugbek Sultanov, told journalists on December 2 that Omurkulov could face up to 10 years in jail if found guilty.

Omurkulov will remain in his post while investigations are under way.

He told the KyrTAG news agency that he had not been officially charged yet and denied any wrongdoing.

He said he is ready to revise his border decrees if need be.
