Pakistani Air Strike Targets Insurgent Hideouts, Killing 25

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani officials say fighter jets and military helicopters have pounded militant positions in the country's northwest following a Taliban bombing campaign against security forces there.

A military official told RFE/RL on January 21 that at least 25 militants were killed in the overnight shelling in North Waziristan Province and the Khyber tribal districts.

The source said militants involved in two bombings in Peshawar last year and a recent attack on an army convoy in the city of Bannu were among those killed.

The military operation came after Taliban bombers killed at least 33 soldiers in two attacks within 24 hours this week.

Eight security personnel were among 14 people killed on January 20 in the latest attack near the military headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
