A lawmaker in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan has been arrested on suspicion of organizing a criminal group.
Russian Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said on January 24 that Magomed Magomedov, a deputy in the Daghestani parliament, and four alleged partners are in police custody.
They are suspected of extortion, fraud, and the organization of and participation in mass disturbances.
Five more individuals -- including Magomedov's brother, Ruslan Magomedov, and another lawmaker, Sirazhudin Abakarov -- have been added to a wanted list, but their current whereabouts remain unknown.
Markin said nine other suspected accomplices of Magomedov have been killed by security forces in special operations.
Investigators say the criminal group headed by Magomedov operated in Daghestan for more than two years.
Police are also looking into Magomedov's international banking activities.
