Emergency services have evacuated about 1,000 people from cars and buses trapped in deep snow in northern Serbia, where snowdrifts have blocked roads.

The state rail company said it was evacuating dozens of passengers on two trains that were stuck because of snowpiles on the tracks.

Officials said on February that gale force winds and snowdrifts have forced authorities to close a major border crossing with Hungary.

Winds of up to 160 kilometers an hour have created snowdrifts up to 3 1/2 meters high in some areas.

Serbian authorities urged people to avoid traveling over the weekend.
