About 15,000 Moscow police officers violated departmental regulations in 2013, officials say, including 131 officers who were caught driving while drunk.

Moscow police chief Anatoly Yakunin said in his annual report to the Moscow City Duma on February 26 that the police officers who were caught driving drunk have lost their jobs and their supervisors have been strongly reprimanded.

He said almost 3,200 police officers had faced administrative reprimands in 2013 "for the poor quality of their morale-building efforts."

According to Yakunin, special measures have been carried out to catch corrupt police officers who "cover up gambling, marketplace crime, prostitution, and illegal taxi services."

Yakunin also noted that almost 16,000 officers had been awarded for exemplary service, of whom 449 were nominated for state and departmental awards.
