Uzbek Couple Arrested in Russia For Attempt To Sell Newborn Child


Police in Russia's southwestern city of Volgograd have arrested an Uzbek couple for attempting to sell their newborn daughter.

Russian Interior Ministry says a 29-year-old Uzbek woman and her 21-year-old partner, also an Uzbek national, were arrested on May 19 after they sold their daughter for 400,000 rubles ($11,500).

Last month, police in Moscow region arrested another couple from Uzbekistan for attempting to sell their 18-month-old son and a newborn daughter for 1 million rubles ($28,900).

In February, two Uzbek women were arrested in Russia's second largest city, St. Petersburg, on charges of attempting to sell a newborn child for 80,000 rubles ($2,300) to an undercover police officer.
