Russia Wins Ice Hockey World Championship

Russia has won the final of the ice hockey world championship, beating Finland 5-2 in Minsk on May 25.

It was Russia's fifth gold medal since the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.

With the victory, Russia avenged a loss to Finland in the quarterfinals in the Sochi Olympics.

Earlier, Sweden beat the Czech Republic 3-0 to take the bronze.

After that defeat, the 42-year-old Czech hockey legend, Jaromir Jagr, told reporters that it was his final game for the Czech national team.

The International Ice Hockey Federation was criticized by human rights groups among others for selecting Belarus to host the world championships due to its poor rights record under the authoritarian rule of President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

However, attendance at the games in Minsk was among the highest in recent years.
