The abuse-of-office trial of former Kyrgyz parliament speaker Akmatbek Keldibekov has been postponed again.
The Birinchi Mai District Court ruled on July 22 that Keldibekov's trial must be postponed until August 1 due to his health condition.
This is the third postponement of Keldibekov’s trial since its original scheduled date of July 10.
Keldibekov's lawyer, Tatyana Chilnikina, says her client has undergone four surgeries recently on his leg and is expected to have a fifth one soon. It is not known what prompted the surgeries.
A member of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Fatherland) party, Keldibekov, whose trial was previously postponed from July 15 to July 22, was arrested in November and charged with abuse of office and financial misdeeds while running the State Social Fund and Tax Service.
He also served as parliament speaker between 2010 and 2011.
