Russia Wins Silver In Junior World Ice Hockey Championship

Russia lost a gold-medal match with Finland in the 2016 world hockey junior championship games January 5, but took home a silver medal.

Finland won gold for a fourth time, beating Russia 4-3 in Helsinki. The United States defeated Sweden to win the bronze medal.

President of the International Ice Hockey Federation Rene Fasel announced that the 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championship will be held in Russia.

Fasel said the tournament could take place in Novosibirsk, western Siberia, Ufa, the capital of the Volga republic of
Bashkiria, or St. Petersburg.

Russia previously hosted the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in 2013.

Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said the 2022 games should take place in a city other than Moscow or St. Petersburg, which have already hosted many tournaments.

"It's better to organize it in ice hockey capitals in the Urals, Siberia or the Far East. We have Chelyabinsk, Novosibirsk," Mutko told TASS. "We don't have to build anything. So, why not?"

Based on reporting by TASS and CTV

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
