Bosnian Serb General Zdravko Tolimir has died in prison in The Hague, where he was serving a life sentence for genocide.
A spokesman for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Nenad Golcevski, said Tolimir died late on February 8.
"He was taken ill at the court's detention center at around 9 p.m. last night," Golcevski said. "He received medical attention but he passed away."
Tolimir, 67, was once considered the right-hand man of Bosnian Serb Army chief Ratko Mladic, who is presently on trial for genocide at the ICTY.
In December 2012, the ICTY sentenced Tolimir to spend the rest of his life in prison for his involvement in crimes committed during the 1992-95 Bosnian war, including the slaughter of 8,000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica.
Appeals judges upheld the sentence in April 2015.
