KABUL -- As many as 650 Afghan schools shuttered by violence may reopen in the coming months, an Education Ministry spokesman has told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan.

Spokesman Mohammad Asif Nang said 81 schools that had been closed due to threats and attacks by insurgents have been reopened in the past few months, most of them in the country's south, which is still partly under Taliban control.

He said that local politicians and members of small communities stepped up and offered their security services to provide a safer environment and an adequate protection for students, so that more schools feel encouraged to reopen.
