Afghan University Teachers Get Pay Raise

KABUL -- The salaries of teachers and professors at Afghan universities were officially raised this week, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan (RFA) reports.

Afghan Higher Education Minister Mohammad Azam Dadfar told RFA that the wages were raised by 80 to 100 percent, depending on their qualifications and on the condition that they do not seek other sources of income.

He said that university teachers' monthly salaries will range between $300 and $800 after the pay raise.

The raise was granted in an attempt to improve the level of education at Afghanistan's 19 universities.

University teachers and professors in Afghanistan very often have to work a second or even third job to make ends meet.
