Ukraine Dismisses Russian Report About CIA Prisons

March 13, 2006 -- Ukrainian officials have dismissed a Russian television report that alleges that the United States Central Intelligence Agency ran secret prisons in Ukraine.

A reporter for the state-run channel Rossiya said Ukraine had hosted a secret U.S.-run detention center for Afghan and Iraqi prisoners in a military garrison in the Kyiv region.

Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Andriy Lysenko said the allegations were a "cheap trick."

A Swiss newspaper, "Sonntagsblick," printed similar claims in January.

Allegations of secret CIA prisons in Europe first appeared in the "Washington Post" in November. The New York-based Human Rights group identified Romania and Poland as possible hosts of the detention facilities. Both countries issued denials.
