ASTANA, May 3, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The corpses of some 800 sturgeon and over 70 seals have been washed ashore near an oil field in western Kazakh region of Mangistau.
A probe is under way to determine the cause of the deaths.
Massive deaths of this kind occur on an almost yearly basis in the Caspian region.
Environmentalists blame the frequency of such incidents on nearby oil fields.
