Turkish Government Suggests Talks With Iraqi Kurds On Security

February 17, 2007

February 17, 2007 -- Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul has said Ankara must hold talks on border security with Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq.

Army chief Yasar Buyukanit, however, accused Iraq's two main Kurdish parties of supporting the rebel Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and ruled out any dialogue.

Turkey says PKK rebels are hiding inside Iraq and the military has warned of possible intervention.

The United States has urged Turkey and Iraq's Kurds to hold talks on security issues.
