Engine Factory In Tatarstan Suspends Operations

June 19, 2009
KAZAN, Tatarstan (RFE/RL) -- An engine assembly plant in Tatarstan's capital, Kazan, plans to suspend its operations for one month beginning on July 1, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The closure of Kazan's Engine Plant will result in some 7,000 workers being sent on vacation.

The decision to suspend production was made after the factory’s major client, Gazprom, decreased its order for gas-pumping engines and urged the company to reduce the price of such engines.

Company officials told RFE/RL that no worker will be laid off and everyone will get two-thirds of their monthly salary during the vacation.

Officials said they will seek new clients during the monthlong shutdown.
