DUSHANBE -- Female vendors at Dushanbe's Zarnisor market have suspended their hunger strike, but might resume it this week, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

The women were on hunger strike from May 6 to May 9 demanding the local authorities reconsider their decision to demolish the market building.

The strikers told RFE/RL that they would not be able to pay their debts back to banks if the market was demolished.

They warned the Dushanbe authorities they would resume the hunger strike on May 13 if the decision is not changed.

Dushanbe-based analyst Junaid Ibodov says that hunger strikes cannot make the authorities revise their decisions, since they are not considered legal actions in the country.

At the moment the market building and its surrounding are under police control.
