Roxanna Saberi on Hunger Strike
April 27 -- Saberi's father told RFE/RL's Radio Farda after visiting his daughter in prison that she went on hunger strike to protest her conviction and eight-year prison sentence. Reza Saberi said Roxanna is only drinking sugared water and is determined to continue her strike until she's freed. "Her hands were shaking while she was standing, it was clear that she has no strength left," he said. "Psychologically she's fine, but physically she's weak because she hasn't been eating." Reporters Without Borders Launches Solidarity Hunger Strike
April 29 -- Four officials with Reporters Without Borders (RSF) began a hunger strike on in support of Roxana Saberi. One of the strikers said, "Journalists' lives are in danger in Iran and we want to show our protest to the way they are treated, arrested, unfairly tried and used as levers against other countries." Iranian Police Patrolling the Internet
April 29 -- Iran's police chief launched an "Internet patrol" to "fight fraud" and counter what he calls "obscene websites". A Tehran-based lawyer told Radio Farda that such measures are illegal. [listen in Persian]
Teachers Strike Against Low Wages
April 27 -- Teachers in several cities and provinces of Iran are in the midst of a three-day strike to protest low wages. Their main demand is implementation of a pay-parity bill passed by parliament in 2007. The measure, which would bring teachers' wages in line with other government workers, has not been instituted despite recent promises by Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
